5/14 am.
It was very hot before I got to track (person) to get
the 06:00 train to Krakow. I had a good 15 min. to shave.
The train pulled out at exactly 06:00. Very comfortable seats
in compartments of 6 people. Stopped at Radom 07:26,
Skarzysto Kamianne at 08:00 & Kielce at 08:38. We
arrived Krakow at 10:28 (4 hrs early). Rain all the way.
There has been heavy rain in Krakow so I noticed some
flooded streets. I was met by Witalik Grodajiski (age =
46). He checked me into the Hotel Cracovia & then we
went to the University. Met two Americans who have been
in Katowice for the last week & are interested in pollution
ecology. One was Dr. Craig McCaffran who is with EPA
in Corvallis, Oregon. At the University Witalik told us
about their program in pollution ecology & then gave me a
lecture with slides on the pollution in the Niepotomice
Forest 10-20 km. from Krakow. This Forest receives the
downcoming winds & fallout from Nova Huta (the large steel
making area Katowice) as well as other air pollution from Krakow.
The forest is slowly dying & there is a massive inter-disciplinary
research effort involved in its study. Then Jan Kostowski
took a taxi into the centrum & looked for a restaurant for
lunch. Most were closed or had a long waiting queue. Finally
we found one & had good deer cutlets. Jan is planning to
go to the Univ. of Georgia for a 1-yr. Postdoctoral Fellowship
starting in Nov. with R. Wiegent. Then we walked in
the rain back to the Hotel Cracovia. I took a nap.
