Bodega Bay Trip
w/ Andrew Golden & Rick Ostfeld
Jan. 17 Left about 1415 + drove directly to Bodega
Bay Marine Lab (BML). After short exploratory walk
to N of lab buildings, we set out 2 transects & live
traps extending from near the shoreline to the top
of the first sand dune. Each transect traversed
various grasslands. Line "A" went from around the perimeter
to dunes & then to dune grom. Line "B" went from around
the dune to toward dune grom. Each line had 20 traps
with about 8 m. apart. At each site we set 1 longworth &
1 small collegiate Sherman trap - trapped w/ dried oatmeal.
These transects were between the Agricultural field & the
N. joint. There was abundant fresh Philodromus sign in
the perennial grass areas and along a small cut. & other
habitats. Then we moved down the Station road about
1/8 mi. and set 20 traps (5 stations) in the Lupinus
dickets on the N side of the road - along the edge of first
sand dune (transect "D"). The last 20 traps (5 stations)
were set in the largely annual grasses on the S. side
of the road (transect "C"). Same trap arrangements on these 2
transects. Total traps set = 100 (50 longworths + 50 Shermans).
Finished setting at 1740; actual setting cd ~1600.
It was almost too dark to see effectively & the
fin we finished. Weather: overcast, st. winds, intermittent
light rain all afternoon. Lots of common scoter.
Also deer & rabbits are strikingly abundant. We saw a
number of deer. Found fox den & dene near transect
