Brooks Island, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
Oct. 10 - 1330 - 1630 Trip organized by East Bay
Park District. I was invited to go by Mary Jeffords.
Boat and its fuel were operated by the District.
Personal: Mary Jeffords, Howard Cogswell, Ted Radke
(these 3 constitute the Shorelines Comm. of the Board
of Directors), Neil Havlik, Roger Wilde, George & Corinne
Colez, & myself. Weather: clear, mod. W. winds.
Purpose: to inspect effects of burning of most of the
island by the Park District for brush control on Sept. 22
Major natural features of the island were: most of the wall
of the quarry, a small section of the S. beach [illegible] the
concrete bunkers, the discharge gear on E shore (on
the aquatic mound), an area of brush S of the concrete's
residence, and the area immediately around the concrete's
area. A number of photographs were taken. Also
natural brush most of the field was leading to the trucksite.
Active Microtus sign was found in all the [illegible]
areas except for around the concrete's area. Som of the
field saw 2 live M. under a board. Running during
signs of continuing occupancy in the mound area was
common. However, relatively few rodent signs were seen on
the E slope of the island. The fire must have burned more
slowly & thoroughly before causing such light
direct fire mortality. Survival of voles in the brush areas
will now depend on how quickly the rains start.
Some active running was also found in the Salicornia
patches. A number of vole carcasses were found,
