LIDICKEN 1979 Jun 10 cont. Shrek - 1 #, Lepus americanus - 1, red squirrel - scared, Spermophilus lateralis - sev. No bears! Then we drove to our study area arriving ~ elev. range 1200. Checked traps (total of 350). A bad day 4 Q haphas = Catharomys spilurus : traps # C, 12, 13, & 51. 250-2800 ft. All had been free from traps earlier morning except for 1 guy. I take a short trip over nearby leading to lower entrance - at loss of road w/ lots of dwarf Birch. It was surprising to me to get Catharomys - and open alpine vegetation. It had rained alot since the traps were set & 3 big traps were floating out another 15ft into flowing tributary from the river. As I checked my first trap I noticed Jerry hovering at the rear of the car (see, thanks for being). I looked back & saw a large Grizzly Bear moving toward me about 30m in away (Jerry said he seemed to have been stalking on for some time). After he saw me look at him, he seemed to lose interest - following in a crouched run along the ridge. This is possibly the same bear we saw in the area yesterday. Took photos as follows: 2 Q trap line was for side # 1 1 Q trap-side # C 1 guy top & study area looking down 1 looking back toward bear sev. of subalpine vegetation About 1430 went to Jerry's Study site again for lunch. Then we returned to Fairbanks, left equipment specimens at INF & organized some gear for
