Alaskan Trip
6-8-14 June
June 8
Left S.F. airport on Alaska Airlines at 1640.
Two flights stopped in Seattle and Anchorage before
arriving in Fairbanks ~2145 (2345 PDT).
Jerry Wolff met me at the airport and we went to his
apartment in town. Very hot night with little breeze.
June 9
Went to INF after getting groceries and vehicle
equipment for trip to Mt. McKinley North Park
vicinity. Got to Healy at 1130 when he stopped
for a cup of coffee before driving off to west
on Otto Lake road. This is just N of Mt. McKinley
North Park. Continued about 1 or 2 mi. past Otto
Lake turning off on a steadily deteriorating track into
the foothills and subalpine vegetation. This brought us
to the new study area where Jerry has been practically
toggling for microdes micrus. This is third trip since
early April on top of 3 or 4 last summer, starting in July.
Saw a grizzly bear in low past 2 study
area. Jerry had set 3 trophies yesterday with Joanne
Conway and Bob Murray. He checked them lines (248 ship
tags - winter of mus. 57. at me 6:11) baited with peanut
butter or oats) while I looked up to alpine vegetation
above the trophies. The transition from subalpine to
alpine is gradual, like dwarf larch, willow, alder and
few sedgy sedge gradually dropping out. I sat
