May 23 cont. - Hess Creek.
Of spring much noticed as we drove back. Around
Fairbanks, the leaves of the deciduous trees are justly
green and & the trees have a definite greenish look.
Around Hess Creek, there is no green grass shoots &
the deciduous trees are in bud only. Only the willows have
catkins.
Set out our study grid 12:30-1:15 +1/4 mile trying to mark
we saw one
Oniodes xanthographus last land now.
1345 - Sat 10
lg. Sh. on young knoll near grid; saw 1 M. acornensis &
fled a winter nest (J came, I still want (J sign.

Sat 10 SL. (5+5) on 2 young knolls at mile 27.5.
1415-1435 - Sat 10 SL. & 20 net traps at mile 27 {M.x
sign common here). Then at 27.8 mi., we set
(1440-15:15) trap data on S. side of road (I set 12 nets
+ 1/4 mile trying to mark them)
& 8 mus. sp. = 20; Jerry set 15 nets). On fifth line just
road (opposite ~ mile 28) set: Jerry - 10 SL. + 10 mus. sp.;
I set 1 net + 19 mus. sp. Jerry saw 2 M.x here.

Set assessment lines down (N) & later (S.) of grid. I
set 10 SL. + 10 mus. sp. Later grid with the latter study
~ 22 m. from the grid edge (T-line). Jerry set 10 SL. close
to the grid. On my way back to grid, I heard my
first mus. sp. go off & found a bird caught M.x # 1037.
Also had seen M.x. x saw out no activity but it is
increasing at this time.
Then we went to the X-Yds (mile ~28.5) where
Jerry drops on Inst. trailer. He turned a pickup
from Alyeska & pulled the trailer up on to their
