May 21 cont. - Lake Mindering
This was 1 man & M.x checked the extents of ~5 M.x
with a canal's hair brush looking for headstuds. Found only
1 headstud & placed it = cotton wick for Design Pointers (UCB).
Head to bed ~2200. Saw red squirrels, & fair amount of
mossy smalltit singing during our long walk & lots of birds (many)
M.x extended most of the way down toward the lake, but
mostly in the vicinity of the stream. We also walked through
a growing meadow along this stream and it had small amount of
M.o. sign. Lots of common nests - fox & llynx sizes; 1 fox-
sized nest contained smalltit hair & some Mice's hairs.
May 22 - Got up ~0700. - Quiet parts of stream program.
0715-0730: j: checked high meadow camp. Bird point -
2 M.x (18+14); Edge - M.x -2 (18+14) - W2u
- 1 (1f) - Jow
Slope forest & mossy line - only, snapped trap & net.
Picked up camp & liked back to growing clearing. P: checked
up old traps line (18+10+5); caught nothing (1 Mss. spc.
= green war singer that contained four bird feathers). Liked
back to airstrip. Saw 1 Snowshoe hare - quite tame.
Stood or looked in the woods & liked down a subsidizing
runway, heading to lake shore; the following shore
to north to our least trap line. P: checked it up 1120 - caught
caught nothing.
Total catch: C. rutilus - 4 - mature shrew
