May 21 cont. - Lake Minchumina
in row of spruce (presumably M. oconomus).
1503 - caught 1 cd. of M.x in one of the wet traps.
Took on back packs and hiked down to the creek
To the north. Lots of M.x sign around.
1520-35: Set 10 wet traps on N side of creek - trail past a
10 wet traps on S side - return black spruce forest - all M.x runings.
When setting trap #4 in spruce I caught a f M.x in set
trap #2 (ringing but skin on ringine very broken). This trap
lies close to the stream.
1545-55: Set 10 more wet traps (S side) on edge of spruce
forest (Indian trail & forest) - small spruce, lots of killer &
elker, moose, elk. & lots of M.x sign, voles calling etc.
1600-1610: Set 15 more sp. (2 set 10 o fmg S') in
drier trail woods to the N. Then we no M.x sign here, but
we wanted to search that culletted. Of the various M.x
runings in wetland cuttings of low bush crowberry leaves, Ledum,
& spruce.
1620 - Check traps in grass. Caught 2 cd. Mx (15+17); had a
bee set near where the John & has taken. We decided do try to
trap all Mx and if this is possible growing jaded - about 1/4 acre.
So we set 7 more wet traps in managed land area to find
extent of the M.x. colony.
1650 - On the lake side edge of the clearing was a small grove
of possibly white birch
knoll with some old Micros sign (both oconomus). Set
5 more Spruce here. Then we walked through the woods to the
crossroad and the Lake. It was really awful, but we finally
came out on the lake shore & then walked S along the lake.
