Aug. 25 cont.
The hotel to pick up my luggage & then took me
to the airport. Worked at airport, had a sandwich
& then boarded a plane at 1900 for Fairbanks. Beautiful
view of the Alaska Range, landed at 1950. Maureen
& Gary Wolff met me at the airport. Went to their
cabin on the Road Street Rd., & chatted until after 2300
Aug. 26
Gary & I went to Dept. of N. Forestry on University
campus, & talked about our Microcosm xanthogathus
project & autopsied some vole from his last trip to the
tundra area. Also learn we help for the Wickiupson Dam study
area to watch the controlled burning of 3 small plots of
black spruce forest. Took a number of photographs, & then
lots of climbing. Met Keith Van Cleave of the Forest
Soils Lab. at the Univ. of Alaska; he was at Berkeley &
only Go's working with Arnold Schultz. Drove out & back
with Dean Argyle who is forest manager with INE.
When we got back to the car we talked with Stan West
& Don Pargyly. They have a beautiful colony of M. xanthogathus
at a site immediately adjacent to the control burn plots
at Wickiupson. They also have Lemmus trimucronatus &
a species of Microtus which I cannot identify; it is small
& has a quite short stepped tail. This plot trapped 2 yrs.
ago instead of M. oeconomus & S. rutilus.
In evening Gary & I did some grocery shopping for our food
trip tomorrow to Hess Creek. C'd out to bed after a
shower at about 2245.
