Point Reyes Trip
with Clinton H. Conaway & S. B. Benson
May 27
Conaway & I left Berkeley about 0935, crossed
Golden Gate Bridge & took road to Pt. Bonita, through
Forts Baker & Barry. The large valley which the road
follows looks in very good shape, a likely place to
trip for Nematrichaea, Sorex, & Zapus. Next we
investigated the Tern. Valley (Elk Valley) Rd. to
the North. It is pretty well thick up & overgrown so
far as we could go; we ran into private roads before
we could get a furr Ft. Cronkhite. The we
briefly visited Muir Woods, had lunch in Bolinas, &
then continued on to Duncans. We checked into
the Duncan Motel (~3/4 mi. S Dunmore) at
4/12 at night for the 2 yrs. Then we explored out
Pt. Reyes to the Lighthouse, went to Drakes Beach,
& returned to Benson's place at 1645. Benson is
1 mi. by rd. S. of Duncans (1 mi. SE Inverness).
The 3 of us set ~ 40 song traps in the dense forest
on Benson's property, especially setting for shrews
in the fern clumps, under rotten logs etc. Then
we went to search new top. A ridge where
road crosses ridge on way to Pt. Reyes (2 mi. W,
0.8 mi. N Duncans, 300 ft.). Here we set about 50
Muss. & jones & 20 Longworth line traps. Then we
drove out the new Park Rd. to "Pt. Reyes Beach Work"
