Lodden 1974 14 Dec. cont. scenery. About 12 miles after Meling Ranch, we saw the first division pipe. About 4 1/2 miles further we came to the park entrance. Shortly before 12:30 we thought we saw a chicken vulture across the road. On the way up the mountain we identified four birds but twice saw a large falcon at a distance too great to identify for sure. Also saw Red-tailed Hawks. The worker at the Park entrance refused to let us in on the grounds that he was closing the park until Dec. 27. We argued with him but he would not give in. We were very anxious to get to Vallecitos meadows to look for Microtus. As it was close 4 pm we turned back a few hundred yards and camped among the Jeffrey pines. There if no set trails and camp (Corona de Arroyo, 7 1/3 mi. E Meling Ranch, 6400 ft.) - the elev. in existing from info. "Camping & Climbing in Baja" by John Robinson. A topo map which seem to have significant low elevation; 33 mi. ground The other 4 drove down to Oak Crossing, 5.6 mi. E Meling Ranch, 5240 ft. This best looking 1/2 hour trail leads to S to Oak Rest area or onto La Grulla, 1/2 and 20 ly. away. Sherman saw camp at bottom of dry creek bed where there was some settling clumps of willows. After dinner we processed more audio. Dec. 15 It got below freezing during the night but it was not so cold on the night E of Tecate. Checked my traps but left them out. Caught only 1 Newtson's 1/2
