LIDICKER 1974 10 Dec. cont. A large owl flew out of one of the oak trees as we parked our camper. At 8 am, we took the temperature - it was 26°F. At the other valley (Nackoguro?) we heard cuttings in the willows of leaves & strips. The strips were cut by a mudcat & not a rabbit. Although it was freezing cold, we checked as many of our traps as we could find (2100-2230). I had 1 Neotoma lepida from a rocky outcrop & 2 D. jackson's agilis from the "meadow." It was 22°F at 2230. Very cold night. I slept in tent & got very little sleep. Having Porcupine calling during nite. Water in camper sink frozen in morning. 11 Dec Got up ~ 0645 Checked & picked off all traps except gopher ones before breakfast. I had 1 more D. agilis from the edge of chapland & 4 Peromyscus maniculatus from along the side of the creek. Gopher ants picked off about 200 - 2 were caught, 1 runner was plugged & the 4th we never did find. We set up our lab & processed 8 animals, taking blood samples, kidney & liver tissues, & then skinning. The blood samples were centrifuged, the red cells rinsed in saline & red fraction protein centrifuged & liquid N2. We finally left our campsite about 1400. Birds noted around camp today: Starling, Oregon Junco - zero fled. Lammes Goldfinch - seen, fled.
