LIDICKER 1973 Apr 30 cont. the night. Cotel was similar to last night in spite of the very strong wind for most of the light. Tracked grid: Purpurthus penicillatus - 1st caught yesterday + 1 grow. P. longimmbrio - 1 D. desertus mariani - 3 (all mature) Control grid: P. longimmbrio = 1 (mature) D. mariani - 3 (1 new + 2 mature.) Finished ~ 0745 After lunch went to walked until 1 camp looking for a favorable study site which is more comparable to the tracked grid, particularly with respect to soil texture. All of the area to the south is trashed to some extent but much of it are slightly so, so hardly could be used. Some of the area, especially toward the Rand Mtns., is now gravelly to rocky. We noticed that the 8's D. mariani readily retreated their tents from the section, so care must be exercised in interpreting non-control 8's. At 1100 we left for a drive to see some areas recommended to us by Kristin Barry. We drove back to Cel 1. 14 & then S over Neversia Rd. to California City. Then on to the Rantahy Mojave Rd which runs along the SE side of the Rand Mtns. From this we turned downed the mountains on Buckweld Rd. In the foothills there is a
