Av. Edinburgh 0745 give - tim to catch local train
to Leuchars jet. (Aberdeen line) Arr. L. Jet. at 0918,
when Mike Jackson & Helen Murphy were waiting to
pick me up. We drove directly to Crail (via St. Andrews)
& to harbor where we loaded our gear on the small fishing
boat (lobster) belonging to Mr. Jimmy Smith
(Cruid 484). Left for Islay at May 1005. It
was moderately rough going over, but a pleasant trip.
It tooks a little over 1 hour. On the Island we
moved in with Graham & Della Thiggs in the small
house rented by the Royal Free Hospital for San Beny's
research on Mus. Graham is a post-graduate student
del Sam's. Bird life is spectacular; several hawks on.
After lunch we helped Graham count 185 Longbilled
traps on the entire island. This was the start of a
camera taking & trapping list too. Mike set an additional
15 traps around the house. Red-lits are moderately common
on the island, quite a few we saw; myxomatosis has
arrived on the island & greatly reduced the red-lits from
Javanian levels. After setting, walked and isled,
especially along W. cliffs where many birds are beginning to
nest. Only the sheep were seen to be nibbling at eggs.
Weather: -- sunny with mod. winds.
