March 16 cont.
We were met on Egilsay by Mrs. Ronnie Moor and taken to their farm where they were going to thrash several stacks of oats. This was basically the same group as we worked with on the 14th as the 2 families cooperate in the threshing operation. This time we caught 91 mice which added to the 19 from before gave a total of 110 from this island, plus a couple numerous nestlings which were not counted or preserved.
One of the 3 stacks we went through contained some nesting [illegible] nests, and 1 pair of chubbs which escaped to a neighbouring stack ("Scaur"). Left island ~ 5/10 and made our way through quite heavy fog back to Tingwall jetty on the mainland. Returned to Kirkwall & later to Spence's for juice-carrying. We finished the N. Ronaldsay mice and did 41 of those from Egilsay. I had nothing in my 3 stacks, so moved them (after dark) further down the road to a grassy area surrounding a small loch. Found a sh-mal owl pellet, but it contained no bones. Got back to hotel about 0035. Only a small amount of vole sign was seen around the lake.

We had tried to get on a Loganair flight to Eday for several days now for this day, but it was booked up. We then arranged to hire a boat to take us (Mr. Nicolson from Shopinsay). He left without us at about 0900 from Kirkwall Harbour, probably because he didn't want to go to Eday - the dense fog which was persisting.
