March 15 cont.
Dearness about #4.40 as I farmer told me - the AM that he would be picking up another stack about then.
Caught 18 more mice giving a total of 35 in spite
of having to compete with 4 cats for the mice. On the
first stack of the morning I lost a few mice close to
a dog. Returned to airport just 10 min. too late to
meet Helen returning from North Ronaldsay, so returned
to hotel - Kirkwall. A few Rattus norvegicus were
also seen in some of the grain stacks on Dearness
which incidentally were oats (white). After "high tea"
we went to Harry to process mice. We didn't get back to Kirkwall until shortly after midnight. Helen had caught over 60 mice from N. Ronaldsay which we
did not completely process, some being left for the next
day (~15).
March 16
About 0900 went to school - Kirkwall to find Mr. Fred
Rose. Borrowed 3 Longworth traps from him to try to
catch some voles. Drove to Spereis - Harry. I processed
6 more mice from N. Ronaldsay while Helen did blood
smears from yesterday. I also set the 3 vole traps
and along the road near the house - not very good shots.
Then we went to Tingwall again arriving 1130 a caught
boat to Egilsay. This time we stopped only at Roway
on route. It was a beautiful sunny morning, but
shortly after noon the fog came in thick and it got cold.
