Home G Albert & Sheila Spence - both volunteers, &
Sheila is also local contact for Manorial Society.
We used their help for processing mice & deep freeze
for our samples. We processed 37 that Sam had
carried on Saturday at Skelpinsay Island, & another
39 while he carried birds on South Hoy Island.
Then we visited with Spence's until about 12:30
& it was about 0100 before we got back to the
Hotel.
March 14
Went to car hire place to transfer car to Helen
& my name. Then to Spence's - Henry for contributing
Isle of Man Society & picking up frozen mice. Sam & I drove back
to Kirkwall via Tingwall on N coast. He
leaves for London in the afternoon. I drove back to
the hotel, to pick up Helen, after buying some lunch.
We headed for Tingwall to catch a boat for Egilsay
Island at 11:30. Boatman is Mr. Marsie Farth. Arr.
on Egilsay about 1300 after stopping on way at Rousay &
(Wyre. A man with a Landrover picked us up at the pier &
(Mr. Cragsit)
took us to farm on N. end belonging to Mr.
Mainland - where they were threshing stacks of oats
("black oats") & traling the straw. We worked with
them until about 1600 & caught 19 Mice - all have white
bellies & very silky fur. We also killed 3 Rattus
norvegicus which ran out of the stacks. The
Mainland's invited us for "tea" & about 1640 drove me
