LIDICKEN 1971 24 Oct. Drove into mountains to NW of Claret. From Claret went W & N on the ridge to Campignan, then to St. Hyppolyte, Ganges, & Le Vigen. Went N toward Lesperon but turned NE a little & went up to about 3700 ft. Zonation of vegetation will not take quickly. Just above Le Vigen is broad f. almost pure chestnut. Then there is a mixed deciduous forest with tamarack and poplars, followed by broad leaved forest, & finally the laurel mixed with fir spruce, few birch, Conifers, etc. Almost all of the dominant genera of forests in N.E. N. America were evident. The mountains were curiously almost devoid of bird life. 27 Oct. Larry & I drove to the Camargue region & completely encircled it. We approached from Sommières, Lunel to Stes. Maries de la Mer, around the lake to the East, continuing about 5 mi. to the SE, returning up the east side, across the top, & back almost to Stes. Maries before returning to Claret. In spite of the hills + swamps of marshes & mudflats, the most striking thing was how devoid the area was of bird life. 28 Oct. Larry shot a Sciurus vulgaris near Dolgen which he later cleaned & salted & I brought back to London. Also took some photos of erosion caused by logging
