LIDICKER 1971 Sept. 14 cont. Checked after breakfast, a full hour round. Franks Rocks produced 9 mice (2 caught 3 in my 9 traps, 2 of which were near 2 more favorable locations, leaving 6 in that area). The traps and the hillings produced 10 mice for a total of 27. At Franks Rocks I discovered a nest of the Stock Dove, located under a large slab rock & containing 2 squabs. Last evening I found a dead [illegible] lesser black-backed gull with wing (it had been struck in Aug. as a juvenile), along the cliffs at Franks Rocks. In looking around before breakfast saw Carrot-2, family of 3 fledglings. Jack-daw - caught 14 of the 16 gouts (+1 stuck) on the island. Observed a jack-daw land on the back of one goat & after awhile jump onto its back. Processed all 27 mice caught although 3 had to be done after "tea". With Dennis, set 12 traps and other country hillings (5 in + wood workshop, 2 in it around the wood shed, & 5 by the garage cars) to supplement those left out for last night. We also found a trap that D.B. had missed this Am; we released the young mouse it contained. This trap was later set in the kitchen. Meanwhile Mike set 15 traps at N. cliffs. All 105 traps were again out. We have now discovered a total of 75 mice, 3 of which were dead & 1 escaped in the process. Read "The Island" by Ronald Lockley (pub. 1969 by Andre Deutsch) - the story of L's life on Skokholm & its history.
