However, when we got back I think he had to,
another bird allowed the house to escape. Another got
away in the aerial room. So total catch should be
81.
Fred brought along a straight stick he uses
for counting running transects. It is 6 ft. long
& 4 ft. thick or it was 10 ft can be sampled
each time it is placed on the ground. We
placed the stick 19 times & counted active mung.
We took turns throwing it & sampled the grid area
& on my to the N. slope. We got the following
counts: 0, 2, 2, 2, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3, 3, 0, 0,
0, 0, 0, 1, 3. = 18 mungs / 190 ft. or
9.47 " = 100 ft.
X 9.7 = 92 mung / acre.
Since he did not place the stick in shallow areas
or other places of low Microtus habitat, but only:
in the area actually trampled, this estimate is probably
too high for the island as a whole.
Angela jotted out 24 checklists (12 S + 12 F)
for taking to her colony & starting for heterozygote tests.
