DICKEN
1971
27 Mar cont.
Right hawks were in the back-sun on the E side.
Total 1,221 traps set (all live traps).
Lots of shorebirds & ducks & other birds seen including: Long-billed Curlew - 2; Stary
Egret - 1; Bufflehead - 6; Golden-eye ~10;
Canvas-back - ~20; Red w. Merganser - 2; Gt.
Scaup ~10; Mallard - 2+; Canada Goose ~6.
Took a few photographs and sketched, but
came too wet by late coming out. Left
Duluth ~ 17:15.
Mr. Blanford showed me the new net design
they are using. It is in braid of jute twine & the
plank is calibrod eyeholes and the sides. He
claims that it is very effective for nets & that they
had not seen a hook one for some time, & that
the bait is much less attractive to Microtus than
in the previous Johnson which we gave a cracked cone.
He felt this method would have no impact on
the microtine population.
