Sept 13 Lm S Bernardo, 5,000ft, Socorro, New Mexico
migration canal, an artificial marsh mostly
dry now, with pools here and there and some
knee deep grass growing around. Also a good
many Mesquite bushes hither and yon. Some
of the thicket are pretty thick. All around in
sand and sage - brush. A more unlikely spot
Sept. for Zapus would be hard to imagine.
Aug 14. Picked up traps. 2 Peromyscus leucopus. No-
ore got any Zapus. This marshy spot is
literally covered with coon tracks. I went
out shooting in the morning and mesquite thickets
to the north. I found the duck blind where Bob
caught his Zapus. Got a Dickcissel, in the
mash grass here + a Brewer's sparrow - 4 whirle
there are many. There are also a great many
Jark Spenows in the grass which I was unable
to collect. Bower got are. I got a Yellow throt
in the thick Mesquite and a young Red-
Winged Blackbird as well. Great Blue
Herons are prevalent and American Egrets are also
common. I have also seen killdeer and yellow-leg
Barn Swallows are swooping over the marsh.
Bower and I went out tonight and picked up
a great many frog and toads. We did this last
night too, I forgot to mention it. I re-set my
trap + 10 live traps when wee around here.
I hope we get something!
