Aug 15 11 1/2 mi NE Chama, 10,000 ft, Rio Arriba Co, New Mexico
hawk, probably a dark Red-tailed, flew out of the
cover and soared away to the north along the
west ridge of the valley. I could have taken it
easily but all I had was half loads. Several
Lewises were calling and "flycatching" in the
opens. I walked along the edge of a little
draw about 50 feet wide and 30 ft deep at
it's mouth, which runs up the west side of the
valley. Several cross-bills landed in the top of
an arpen. I collected 1 ? DeSoreau flew.
I also chased 2 Red-Shafted Flickers around
this grove. I got a hit one with a .22 aux but
it wasn't enough to stop him. I loked below
across the slope. On the hill to the west of
camp I found fresh porcupine baking on a
spruce, about 10 feet stripped off ore. I
set 64 mouse traps on the rocky, barely hill
to the east of camp. (The slope & "kish ledge")
The set ran into the rock-slide about 1/3 1/2 the
way up the hill.
Aug 16 A chickaree was chattering in the big spruce by
our kitchen in the middle of camp as we ate
breakfast. I picked up my traps. Tadpot!
10 Peromyscus | Clethronomys and Microtus
longicaudus. This stirred such a feeling amongst
the boys that tonight I have more company
setting traps. Nothing succeeds like success.
