15 February Guatemala City, Guatemala. Hunter and probably would give information. Stomach - one had eaten a pasa. Wally not check. Had stories about small gp. howlers, 107, six, ?, near his place. Theirs little hunting of jaguar in Guatemala now. Some of what said was suggestion - thought howler 70 lbs., said jaguar in zoo was 8 [it is 57]. He was favorably impressed with Jorge Flores. He thought savage are real. In 3 yrs. or guide, hunter killed only 6 jaguar; mostly poor hunters. He himself claimed to have killed 3 or 4. By using bait, he thought he could photo jaguars. He thought mestizos have more respect for law than Mexicans; tho all in his area burned fields last yr. in spite of legal prohibition. Many settlers transported from S. coast to Sayaxche area; said former Mexicans planned to dam Usumacinta + flood parts of Guatemala. Settlers could not make living; starving. There may account for guerrilla reports. 16 February 1972. Took 0730 Aeromex plane for Flores. Steep slopes under cultivation. River on dry dissected hills, at first. Later green, broadleaved trees, cultivated patches. Patcher frog between green hills of forest. Then flat, no cultivation, occasional lakes in forest. Grassy clearings, irregular as if natural, about 10 % of ground. Then trails, fences, burned spots, dirt roads, occasional village as approached Lake Peten. Arriving at edge lake. Bungalow, thatched, of Maya International Hotel close. San Benito - village - start of bus line for Sayaxche (7 am, 1 pm). Causeway (dirt road) 300 yds. to Flores, small town. Jaguar in lake. At edge Flores, met Jim (?) Graham, Harvard (? British) archeologist. He thinks jaguar and ocelote all over Peten. Du Belie, one
