7 October 1971
We (due K & I) took bus from Oakland to San Diego, arriving about 8 am. Spent most of day at zoo, where warmly greeted by director (Schroder), and guided around most of day, having lunch with President, KC. Lint especially helpful to us. George Bannelle also present. There apparently 2 jaguars but no tigers in zoo. [We went to Pacific Beach and stayed with my cousin, Tom Buckingham]
8 October 1971. Took bus to San Ysidro. Walked over to Tijuana, & took noon Tres Estrellas bus for Guaymas. Arrived early morning & walked out to Playa de Cortes. Calm waters, various islands, desert climate & vegetation. Then back to Guaymas town, and took bus to Navojoa. From there, local bus to Alamos, where we stayed at Hotel Enrique ($12 pesos each) on plaza. At foot of mountains here, but mostly mosquito infestations. Said to be many jaguars nearby. A Rancho Trails Park advertised hunting trips to mountains. Local men said jaguars in hills, but few, perhaps 2-30 years taken. Met Dr. Pennington, anthropologist, from Southern Illinois U.; he also thought some jaguars in mts., tho had not seen any (his Mexican companion also thought grizzly bears to exist). Back to Navojoa
(Sunday Oct. 10)
then on to Culiacan by bus. Stayed hotel ($70 pesos), where lodged at street called Perseida.
9 October 1971
