Journal 13 February 1972 Panajachel, Guatemala pockets in steep canyon. We saw 3 black puma (yaguar) on face of a large stone wall. Seemed poor an collecting area. 14 February 1972. At 9 am, departed on bus for Quetzaltenango City. Arrived about 11:30. Crowded, moving downtown. Put up at La Florida (8th avenue later, 12+13 cells). Visited apartment of J. Van Kirk, 2-66, 6th Av., Zone 2. Not home; broke leg on motorcycle. Visited him at Centro Melic in zone 10. We had lunch at Lake Petenbatun, +1 km. dry water from Sayaxche. (L.Carpenter & D.Bradford had visited there). No now protected wildlife. Said then jaguar killed in area last year. Many ocotei taken, especially along roads. Poor favorite ocotei bait. Formerly took hunting partner in, but no more. Little local hunting now. A Dr. Cordero, millionaire of Sayaxche, had hunted much in past; probably think now few jaguar then. But JVK thinks still good population. Think home range up to 20 km. diam. - return to same area after a few days alone. Ocotei trodden within 1/2 km. of his place, any direction. Local guide - "Adan" - on north of Don Leonardo Flores, next to VK place. We can stay there, or would be glad to have students & other investigators. Cover nearly with po lovers, saw very large (extinct manure?). No hunting last 2 years. Burner many - take cattle. Logging increasingly depleting forest. JVK claims to know country clear up to Piedras Negras or Usumacinta. Emphasize abundance pigs & other forest game in his area. Will talk again, look at photos. | Visited Rodriguez Augusto, El Salto so., Calles 11, 2-51, zone 1. Probably in 30's. Good English. Associated with OTS, especially El Salto station (where family resided). Very friendly.
