Journal 10 Feb. 1972 To Ocosingo, Chiapas, MEXICO of smoke. All aged crocodile now. This tour beginning of a Chile group. I saw no guns in area town, one along road. Apparently not marked trailhead for hunters. Returned to San Cristobal. 11 February 1972. Bus to Comitlan. Much pine - oak, and first breakof more forest; dry now, four people along same stretch. In Comitlan, found no animal skins in market, & saw no guns. We took 10 a.m. bus line to Ocelot, where out Mexican immigration. Then 2 km. to Cristobal entry point, a small station. Bus then (Peto Leris), which took us on to Puerto Lencerozo. Hotel in lower dry area. But soon climbed steep - sided volleys into pine zone again. Population low, houses solid and neat, lunch gun positions among stands small pines, cam- ton "plowing" on slopes. Stayed Hotel Cerro. 12 February 1972. Took bus on toward Panajachel. Change at crossing to small line, which descended steps winding road to lake. In small town by edge lake several hotels, a number of fairly resident Americans. Found A.C. Sturtevant, Chet 2945, near Hotel Martinez. He re- tired from Univ. Michigan, zool. dept. Specialized in studies of Ixoste- mala. He was very hospitable; we had use of a complete house. He had already written me a letter, concerning spotted cat study site. In addition, he suggested that I inquire of zoother anthropologists working in Petoer; inquire for them at Santa Elena (near Flores). Names of some: Good Neck Hellmuth (sp.); Graham.
