9 February 1972 Tuxtla G., to S. Cristobal de las Casas, this
the high ground of Isla de la Concepcion, but that the area was
still very muddy. North wind so today; fairly cold, overcast. We
Took 3 p.m. bus to S. C. las Casas, on way to Ocosingo.
10 February 1972. Overnight at S.C. las Casas. Looked over market,
where many Indian products, but saw no wild animal
products for sale or worn. Took bus to Ocosingo. It climb-
ed through pine- oak zone, descended to upper broadleaf region.
Ocosingo in wide flat valley leading E. airstrip at edge town.
Small adobe town. Saw no animal skins in store. A few dozen
costumed Indians seen. Went to office of Guardian Forestal - the
capitan was out, expected back, but did not come. I talked with
his wife. They had formerly been stationed at Balenque, where more
hunting than here. She thought locals knew hunting of spotted
cats prohibited, and were afraid to take them. No professional
local hunter. She mentioned Molinos Dam,- said much wildlife
area destroyed by it. / At airstrip, 3 small plane. [illegible]
time of policia[no] control men, who had detailed maps of their
region, which reached to San Quintin. Talked with one pilot and
associated men. All agreed little hunting in area except for
deer. "Nada" at El Real - pero venado. Hunters going to deep
forest rare. 700p. for trip to Agua Azul. Few skins brought in for
sale. Compadres went to settlements to get them. Agua
Azul main entry to deep forest. One man said he thought were
many monkeys of 2 kinds along river (Cabo ?) above (N.of)
San Quintin (where many people). Mod. slowly today over foot
to B.- they said lived in April-May, but that was the season
