5 February 1972
SE of Escarcega, Campeche, Mexico.
Open shelter, where men had camped much, opposite an "aguate." Shell
deposits near. 2 shot shells. We went in for 20 minutes and
camped. Frost, fairly common here, sometimes to 50°. Many antelopi
as before. Many between road in eve. I walked road with light for
2 hrs. Heard a cow no such as coyote/gizte. But saw two
mink/guys back in trees - lead crowing first: Brown hen, white
belly, perched in tree by last aguate in night. Few mosquitoes. About 10pm,
two cars went by on road in. (Later we heard that a couple of
American families were hunting & camping in that way.)
6 February 1972. Pests seen morning, antelopi heard. Saw one
hummingbird only. Back by aguate, saw small plum again - black
breast, white throat, rufous belly near flys. Naked back - Tree
Aguate reached at 12:15. We saw no cat track on road - same
dog, but openrun, perhaps racoon, aguarul - no persing,
deer tracks. Walked on W. or N.W. Reached gp. hut by an aguate
at 13:15 - Copecangita. Again men said tejilla and tegies
time, & that they had killed some - I asked to see skin; they
said they had been sold. Tegies skin brought 2,500-3,000 pesos,
they said. We were on different road than one out. In one
front patch I saw flock of 10+ of the blue and black joip, 70'
frost. Brown joip common, noisy. Reached highway at "20"
(Calient len 2 1/2) at 4:25 p.m. Met party of 10+ hunters,
2 trucks, from Puebla - they were stopped by the mud. But
fact illustrate heavy spent hunting very of once. Took bus
back to Escarcega. Met another pair of hunter, from Mex city,
at Hotel Losul. Bird unavailable again.
