Cuylama Valley, Calif.
Rd. which runs W. to S. of Cuylama town. Irrigated fields alfalfa,
+ prep. for other crops. Some antelope fields. About 2 mi. W. on
Foothill, a feedlot with a few hundred cattle. Opposite Tennis
Cyn., grp. of 200+ lines - only sheep seen. Some gps. cattle in
hills to S. Included Bode & Oliva Canyon area, where some cliffs. Good
view all ridgetops, west part McPherson Pls. Only heavily bluffed
area near Montgomery Paterno (Branch Canyon). Verrain ranch roads
to S. of Foothill. I continued W.; road turned N. to Hwy 166 at Bell Rd.
I drove E. to New Cuylama & took road on W. side to S. to oil
plant & Branch Canyon. Took W. road (Foothill again) to Alice Park,
a flat new near 3 streams, where much shade of oaks, & dozens of
camping vehicles. Trail S. to Oliva Mesa ridge. / Back to Branch
Cyn. area, where a phosphate mine. Apparently walked for Lion Cyn.
area & Desquino; used horse trailer. / Back to Cuylama for gas, &
Foothill Rd. to survey for reptiles again. Windy & hazy now, about
2 p.m. Saw a golden eagle flying low over the cultivated fields;
adult, but at times appeared to have yellow-brown on its white triangle
underwings, condor-like. Also one turkey vulture; Ben Harbon
thinks few here. / I drove them to Roger Sts. & took road
to Soda Lake. About 12 mi. in saw band (100+ sheep); no
more. Occas. gps. cattle. Some greenish-brown whist, 1'1/2'
tall, but mostly very dry. / Saw one turkey vulture a few mi.
S. of California Valley. On Hwy 58; & off at Salt Cula area.
In P. [illegible] nest, I saw 3 Merlin's active; possibly fourth in
active, lying on ground. Back to San McMillan Ranch.
28 May 1979. Monday. Official Memorial Day. Overcast starting, but
later broke up to thin cirrus. Talked w/ Law. No news of
