Journal 25 May 1979 Cuyna Valley, Glft. Norwest road about 10 mi. to Valle Visto & camped in pines + live oaks. Overlook bare grassy hills w. some cattle to N. 26 May 1979. Hazy, with light breeze. Watched for carders to 0745. Heard Orestyx + Raphatys calls. Then up road to S. From Cowhead Peters got good view west Brush Mtns + Mt. Abel. (at least never got picture taken at each within recent years). Bbrosy, small to W. of Valle Visto seems good hunting site; conspicuous to birds, accessible to telecamera im. / Took side road E. to Marian Camps, 6400', on Brush Mtns ridge. Big yellow pines, pinyons. Walked N. along east arm lower, to 6700' +. Good views of San Emigdio Bank to E. Many suitable corvid roosting trees. Small snow pet- chers on W. side Mt. Abel + barrnil. /Saw a kestrel above sharp- land through pine trees. A few ravens, steller jays, flickers; Orestyx calls. / Back at Marian c/g 1140. Being up fairly large. /1pm, hiked a mile toward San Emigdio Mtns.; 4-w d. road goes there (also to W). Departed 2 pm + drove via local road around + to top of Mt Abel. Juniper + Pinyon Ponderosa pine. Big yellow pines. Few people; 2-3 cars only. Heard Orestyx then. Good long views of mtns. / Returned down road + watched Brush Mtns. East from 3:30-4:30; no carders moved till back to Marian c/g for a coolnite (but neighbor motorcycle + rod-journey). Walked 1/2 hr S. + back in evening. Heard poor well, no owls. 27 May 1979. Sunday. Cool, calm in pines. Descended road W. to main road. (from near 20 mi. port) Scanned N. side Mt. Abel for roosting birds; saw none, but fre- quent suitable dead trees. Drove slowly N., 8 a.m. Mi. 19, flushed an imm: golden eagle from beside road; much white bare tail. Cowhead Peters, hunting site possibility. Fairly clear days, better than most. Once stops to stalk for carders, eagles. Only ravens seen. Went down + W. to Hwy. 33 + about 2 mi S. to Football
