Journal 13 18 May 1979 Carmel Valley, Calif. John Davis took us on bird walks around. I talked w/ group later about carders. They voted $300 to my carder investigations. 14 May 1979. Drove back to Berkeley. 21 May 1979. Have talk about carders & objections to capture program for Cooper Ow. See at 8 p.m. to San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. 23 May Wed. Departed Berkeley 3:30 p.m. Drove via Hwy 5 to El McMillan's & stayed night. 24 May 1979. Talked w/ Gregory & Jan. Near Ch's house, 2 kestrels chased 2 barn owls vigorously, as if one had taken nothing. Many blackbirds & kingbirds in trees. Bludge Me M. said 3 groups lovely quail seen so far; one bunch 25-30 young. Hot day. / V-g swallows nesting in prairie fallow cliff. Jan said barn nest in ditch NW of my shack. I drove to hwy 58, via Navejo Rd., to Queen Bee turnoff & on to La Parga Ranch, where talked w/ Stu & Debbie. No carders seen. Stews says little attention to birds. Stews reduced cover to about 250 head. Returned to Jan's. Some baby still growing fields. Blow away still. 25 May 1979. Friday. Departed 0645. Good sunlight in falow nest; I saw 3 young, half blackish feathers. I drove S. to Carnegie Plain. Before California Valley, a group 500+ sheep. A few far mls. S., one burrowing owls. Few cattle. Another bunch sheep at far S. end plains. Saw one prairie dogman near S w shed about 20 mi on road N. of Hwy 166. / To New Cuyana & talked w/ Ben Harlow, USFS. Said carder report about 3 weeks ago of 5 sightings in 4 days by men looking for falow nests; Olive & Brooks Cayon S. of Cuyana. He said a helicopter applied poisoned grain in Cuyana Valley about 2 weeks ago. / I set out to drive to Keys Ranch. Got stuck in loose sand. Eventually out by putting on tire chains & building stock road in sand. Third & sweaty, so drove up Carr
