Journal 9 May 1979 San Luis Obispo Co, Calif. was at radio near Rocky Butte, NW 640. Co. - saw some thundering reports. Later heard that Santa Barbara people out on 8 may; rained. Also Bryan Walton of Santa Cruz was up & down Santa Lucias in plane but saw no condors. [blank! ] 10 May 1979 Thursday. Clear cool night. Many baby cottontail running arounds. Got Cought pregnant at Nestoma. Breakfast with Dew. Departed 9:00. clear, calm. Little Canyon gorse, partly green on N slopes; day 6. New roadrunner near corner. / I walked N in canyon near Switzer grapes, looking for nests in mud cliffs. 3 old quail nests W. several old snake nests; one nest had half grown young. Kinglides (later tail marks) on grape vines. Saw goshawk, 10+ black sparrow. In cliffs 1/2 mile N.; 2 prominent stick nests - scree? Some other hole w. whitewash. Many lizards out. 11 a.m., clear, warm. In air are red-tailed hawk done at another. Drew W. to Hwy. 58. y-d-nagpies. Visited Peter Switzer new home / Drew back F. along Shell Creek. Opposite (N of) windmill, 3 cars parked by the fenced stripix strip. There included about 50'19; leader Bryan Walton of Santa Cruz. One man had descended to prairie falcon nest in middle of R. cliff & landed the 2 young (about 2 wks old, Walton said. Later I heard that they put three captive-raised young in nest.) In car, Walton had 2 captive raised falcon chicks, to be released at other nest site. A girl from Cal Poly to watch nest on occasion / This nest manipulation done in Wendler Wildlife Area w/o know ledge or permission of Switzer. Saw telephone game under capt. Thomas about it - / Reached grain truck for shews; could not find. 10 May Talked w Jan, Elow. Departed Eli's ranch 10:00. Saw adult golden eagle about 2 mi to N, flying low (new fledging time?). No baby quail seen yet. Drew via Hwy 5 to Barbelo in Chew pickup. Took live Nestoma - about a week later it gave birth to 5 young. 12 21 May 1979 w.
