rare, maximal; now 4-5' tall, green. Ch recently back from Aslibun
lecture tour in east. Many young cottontail now. Talked about sand
to & other subjects w/ Ch & Dray. Stayed for night.
8 May 1979. Now talk w/ Ellen. Wolf absent. Departed door own
dir to Dan McMillan ranch. Talked w/ Dan about eastern 1000
passing, etc. Dan reports quail food poor, though grass & grain
crops maximal. Believes moved his bees out - food for
them scarce. Orioles nesting in trees at house. Bluebird/badging
seen. No young quail seen yet. Nest in gooseberry had 2 or 3 hatch-
lings + 2 eggs, no of swallow. Dan said some redtail hawks nest this
year on ranch, though none last year. More green he has ever
had, & probably best berry production. I did get trail news
from my study one brief show, but found no snake or mice;
about 10' dia., 5' deep. Occasional sprinkle w/ soil during day.
Min. temps. this winter about 24° F. Max so far 83° F.
9 May 1979. Departed Davis 0700. Drove to Queen Bee camps. & via
Pine Ridge Rd. Parked 0920. walked 1 hr. 5 on ridge to head Beartrap
Canyon & watch for vulture & eagles. '1/2 cloudy, no clouds. Mt. Quicksell;
saw 1 pair, also pruner, bluebird, titmouse, red-wing in blue-ole grass
land patch. Least Warbler & Lophoptera calls, new-calls, at edge oaks - greenleaf.
2 p.m., 3/10 summer, calms. Searched for salamander under oak's leaf; found
none. Saw adult Phrynosoma in toil in chaparral. Track of deer, fox (no print).
Ravens. But saw no Falconiforms. '16:05, left top & walked N. Keeler via
'710. Drove down to Hwy 58 via La Panza Ranch. Now here, but two
Turkey vultures flew low over canyon west of lane. Returned to Davis.
This was to have been day of Racer count in Santa Barbara Co. (Bill Francis
of Marting watched at Baldchin's Leap near Big Sur; saw none. Ch McMillan
