1 February 1972 Escarcego, Campeche, Mexico humano. He said jaguar, ocelot and other predators were not protected, the deer were, and quickly pointed out two stores which brought below. He said main hunting area south of the E-W road, entering about km. 21. He introduced me to store owner Jorge Benas A. at corner of plaza (Calle 29 No.30). A fresh ocelot skin lay on counter (hunter said he got 70 pesos for it. Jorge very open about hide business. He said many jaguars taken this dry season - that he had bought about 100 during the last year. I thought 3-4000 must be taken annually from all Campeche. It should mean how a large ocelot & small jaguar skin, freshly salted and stretched out. Said he would sell jaguar for 3000 p. While I was in store, another ocelot skin brought in dried - Jorge did not buy it (see color?). We photos later; One man, Manuel -, had dogs to hunt cote & other game. Most shot in daylight by hunter wait-ing by water hole. "Lampara" hunting poor. One area mention-ed for Aguada Seca. One visiting sport hunter was the Dr. [illegible] (American) who had operated on Lopez Matias. One man had killed two with 2 shots of 22, dog dog waiting for second after first came. He said enter at Matamoros, km. 21. Jorge also offered to send a boy with me to show me place, tracks, etc. He introduced me to brother who sold javelina, deer, pavo de mate, paca, etc. I asked Jorge to get skull tiger ocelot for me. He said his paco & jaguar man also got common - called them "leocillo" "leoncillos." In market saw large
