Santa Barbara, Calif.
on culture. Largely paid for by Western Foundation (Ed Harrison), & run by them.
To be 3 days of papers. Some by Mundy, Perrywick (British Univ.),
Naustor, Ferrare (France - films), McAdoo (Arden Color), others.
Eichen of Patuxent gave only papers by USFWS men, on captive Arden
condors. Enos & Smart of FWS Task Force present. Good turnout of
local people, students. Stayed w. Wells Abbott & family; visit to museum
24 Mar. 1979. More papers. Ed Harrison showed Pemberton color films &
gave comments; invited Ed on us. young condor out of nest. Talked
w. Enos of USFWS; he seemed to think no public input required to capture
plan for C. Color. Stayed w. Wells Abbott & family; dinner included
Drew & Linda McMillan.
25 Mar. 1979. More papers & movies. Talked w. Eichen, who was not in
favor of molesting nests, not in favor of capturing all condors. Ike &
Smart said radio-telem. would require aircraft monitoring. Smart
thought "Draft Recommendation" still under consideration, not in final
copy or signed. Talked w. Blauvelt, who is unhappy about lack of
scientific use of zoo birds. Nothing controversial discussed (except w. Cros).
Met Keith Nelson, who now favors no captures, & will publish article
date movie
in Imprint, local & Nat. Assoc. journal; Mike MeLevy, DVM, now represents
Brief meeting w. Fred Eickel & Bobt. Carter.
Wildlife Federation in Calif.; seems to favor no captures. Stayed w. Wells.

visited Jeff Hudson, editor of "Cedar Cell," local Sierra Club journal. Also visited
David E Davis, doing experiment on annual cycle of weight in Spermophilus
beachyi under various daylength regimes; no apparent interest in condors.
Seems to think no additional restrictions on use 100% probable, espec-
ially because of one paper by Walter Howard that shows better cattle gain
when squirrels reduced (but gain at season when squirrels get little winter). I
