barred wire fence. In these bushes and on fences we saw several
shrikes, & in bushes many old nests, probably of shrike.
22 March 1979. High fog. Foli with dew. Then drove via Hwy 58
and Nacoo's grade to Pogo, and on up to Hi Mtn. Lookout (40 mi.). at
3,300'
10:30 started down trail to Hi Mtn. about 102', saw one peregrine
galen atop Hi Mtn. Rock; soon flew to W. 1,110 at creek in bottom. Some
footprints, fresh, of man & dog. 11:25, at pascalug rock, 2600'. Slowly
down to S. Heard 2 Bullos calling, & Ospreys. 12:15, opposite peregrine
cliff and "hot" hole { }, No new white work. Saw 2 red-tailed hawks perh-
ed atop pinto 1/2 mile W. Eventually saw 3 turkey cultures at once, circle-
sing above Orogan's head cliffs. Overcast; threat of rain. I looked at foot
Huffit Hole Mtn.; flat where Schmitt camped last year; no signs recent use.
Steve & Tim watched cliffs until 2 p.m.; no falcons seen. | a yellow
"screw" plane passed over us and Huffit's Hole 2 fun times; D-shap-
ed trail like an S N.S. | started looking up, 14:10, 2 Catherines perked to-
gethor atop cliffs 1/4 mile E. of old penguin site. Quail calls. Red
flowers by trail. Occas. deep tracks. Hiked W. up hill; at sun
15:40. Occas. sunshine. Drove down. No sign of warming or else-
we along roads or trails. Back thru Shell Cr. canyon. Near
Sinton's crossing of San Juan Cr., we saw a prairie falcon perch-
ed atop cottonwood. It flew off in a wide circle around newly
ploughed ground. | About 200900 today, a yellow plane sprayed
alfalfa near strips on Sinton's. Saw 'billdeer' on ploughed
ground. | Returned to San's ranch & stayed at my shack; 6 mi.
cast & cool.
