21 March 1979 Mr. Skender, San Luis Obispo, CA / T
McMillan arrived. More talks Steve and Tom and I went to Gregory's
home to visit. Conor talks mostly. Then we departed & drove west
through Benton's Ranch to area of spotted nests in cliff, N. of
a windmill. Approached cliff; saw stock nest 1/2 way up 60'
cliff in a vertical groove. A red-tailed hawk flushed, circled
silently, and departed. Another in air over cliffs, calling
occasionally. At rest, two hawks females, one w. nesting mater-
ial; nesting in bowls nest ?] Endeav as we approached cliff one
red-tail in air dropped an object (mouse ?), descended 15', and
caught it in air; [illegible]

kantsip ? / Steve looked at foot cliff under
nest; no food remains. We departed & inspected 2 nearly
clay cliffs. Atop one, Tom saw a prairie falcon alight.
We also saw a raven, at this cliff, flying. / We drove on west
a mile. Attempted a "guzzler" for quail to water. Then on
to site fallen pine where former eagle nest; walked up draw
behind (path) of it. An old nest, possibly eagle, in a dig-
gers perice. We saw no eagles. / Descended to road. Drove
back east to San Juan Ck. road. Went upstream 3.5 miles
to area of ferris sand w. much stipley on west side road;
walked around. Found many Dipodomys burrows in the
sandy soil. Many white-crowned sparrows in brush. We
returned to Luis, and to my shack for the night. / In
morning, going down lower Izellie Canyon, saw one red-
tail raven. It alighted atop a wood fence, ran along it, and
flew down. / Berley, now about 1 ft. tall. Much yellow-
flowered Amseichis near road and near my shack. / Near
the bowls cliffs, a large band of stipley brush looked by
