Journal 7 March 1979. San Luis Obispo, Calif. See some scalopuses, including me 2" long. Saw Hydra in stream but no fish. Returned to San McMillan ranch. Talked w. Larry Hartig en route. 8 March 1979. Trips to Hi Mtn area. Drive via Hwy. 50 and Navajo grade to Pozo. Talked w. Robert Chuba, AF&CO (?) in charge. Nearly all new people since 1976. Drove up to lookout. Clear; wind 10 kts. Departed 11 a.m. on trail down to Hi Valley. Trail divisions adequately cleaned. Saw weakling mark miner's letters under oaks. Clear stream. Two Turkey vultures soared about the marsh with (looking for next site? ) 1210 at crest N. of the marsh with a staked Sam Huff's Hole side. No footprints of recent use. Lunch on trail lng. 120° from Drogan's Hd cliff, site of condors & penguin nesting. Took photos. White-throated swifts / at 1:29 stop under oak over from penguin site, lng. 005°T. Met 3' Catalina on trail; sluggish. Fish. Saw thrashers & Oriole's. Heard calls latter. (No sign) condors on falcons. Hiked back up trail, 1 1/2 hrs. to lookout. Hot drink. Returned down road to Pozo, thence to San McMillan ranch. 9 March 1979. Talked w. May McM. & Ellen McM. about condor problems. Then drove via Hwy. 5 to Berkeley. 19 March 1979. Berkeley to Shandon, San Luis Ob. Co. Departed 2 p.m. in Cheer-pickup, alone, and drove via Interstate 5 to Solvang, up Bitterwater road to El-Mc Millan's ranch (he away), thence slippery dirt road to San McMillan Ranch. Arrived about 9 p.m. Recent rain. Camped in my shack. Steve Herman & student Tom Steinkoff arrived later, from Evergreen State College, Olympia, Wash. On road between El's & Janis I saw several pocket mice on road and at least one kangaroo rat. Clear night. 20 March 1979.
