Journal 6 March 1979 Coyana Valley Santa Barbara C. but perhaps had not seen them. He had bad experience with Bald Eagles or Klamath N.F. land interests, suspectie talked about 2 hrs. But the (Dave Alexander) D.R. will have to get permit for road use to Santa Barbara Peters area. I drove on 60 mi. to Santa Maria. Cattle ranchers & some farmers. Went to Ste.m. Ranger Sts. (Calletti St., Downcross or turnoff), & talked w/ Louren Hill- man, & from 5E, wildlife grazing & wild life. New 6 mo., about 30 yrs. & serious. Swamped w/ office work, little time in field so far. She said that Canos - Workana area still possible for inclusion as wilderness area; under consideration. I tried to advocate her plant condo status (nr. Stanton). recent developments. I Departed & drove back to San Mc M. Ranch. 7 March 1979. Clear calm night. I drove to Hwy. 58, thence to La Panza Ranch. Steve Arnold & wife had not seen any condors lately, & no recent cattle losses. Heartog Canyon 5 mi. from ranch house. Went 1 mile up canyon to water tank & parked. Roily moppies in expansures, where old nests. I put 2 dead joelollite near top of grassy hill as bait. Departed car about 0930. Hiked 2 hours up canyon near creeks. Could often heard Osprey calls. than lunch 1/2 hr., to roads trail to Castle Crops. Walked up trail to top of second crop ( conglomerate rocks). Arrived about 1230. Searched cliffs for eagle nest but found none. Fired 6 pistol shots at cliff but failed to see birds there, but 1/4 mile W., around a curve in cliff, a prairie falcon fleshed & flew over brush, calling bwaw - bwaw. Large black areas under wings. Perched on point of cliff. / About 1 pm, I saw one g. eagle circling above cliffs, but it did not land or pass close to cliff face. I think no eagle nest in crops area. Departed 1 p.m. & hiked down to creeks, thence to car - about 2 1/2 hrs. total. Found no lion tracks, but deer, coyote, fox & bob-cat tracks. I found over rotten logs & pole branches but saw no salamanders Did
