4 March 1979. Coyama Valley, Santa Barbara Co.
Quatal Canyon, now, a condor may eat cactus meat? Much talk about cactus.
Condors usually came from Santa Barbara Cyn side. She said Destrudi Bayes
interested in cactuses and had consulted w. Dick Smith. I drove on about 2
miles to Dusty River Ranch road on W. side, intending to visit Johnstoft
cabin, but stream too high and soft, so did not attempt crossing. I
Then drove up Quatal Canyon dirt road. About 1 1/2 mi. to turkey
farm, where 1000' white birds. Bordering brush, juniper, pinjon.
Desigual river, Toad Camp area tops, about 5700', & some snow on ground.
Drove slowly down gravel road, looking E. into Santiago Cyn. & Brush
Mtns. Condors could roost in pinons at head, w/ mti clds & go down
canyon to grassland hills in San Emigdio Ranch area & Swidden R.
Cabin area where boat could be put at Carhead, & lowered down at larger
Apache Paterns. I camped at Valle Vista, Kern Co. e/g., 4500'. No other
campers. Good view across Santiago Cyn. E of grassy hills to N.
Fog at about 3000' in San Joaquin V.; in evening, fog rose &
cleared me, but later dropped down, so clear. Camped among pinons
& oaks, saw 2-3 cactuses at times.

going through grassland hills by Swidden Ranch. Drove town to
New Cuyama & visited Dan Norlson, resource forester of Mt. Pinos
district. He & an assist wnt-thought Santa Barbara Cyn. road not
possible for 2wd. Snow visible on Coyama Ph., & other ridge
above about 4500'. No brow of me. Watched 6 cactuses & other
birds & mammals. Tried to enlist coagitation & aid in condor stud-
ies in district. He said cactus (to? ) had been seen roasting on
two newly established Hard Rock Canys, near Pyramid Rsn., so
campsite had been moved N/He had some condor pictures on walls
