Journal 2 March 1979 Mr. (C) Holome, S.L. Obispo Co. (of Mervino)s Ranch. Can observe from road to Mt. Alcedo Canyon, then from late Aug. on. Much other talk. Fine clear night. 3 March 1979. Sat. Met with Glen. Then drove over hills to Saw Mill Mills ranch & my shack. Unloaded. Then talked w/ Glen. He is keeping close track of any attempt by county (Earl Kales, ag. comm.) to poison us. 1080. I am thinking that legally an F.I.C. might be required for such work in my shot shack & trees. Rain close normal now. Noted no migrant birds or nesting yet. To Cuyama Valley, Santa Barbara Co. 4 March 1979. Drove over to Elsi. Then departed in fog about 10 am. for Carrizo Plains. Soda Lake full; no fog plains. (2) saw of about 50 cows & calves, 9 mi. S. of Calif. Valley.) Saw 1 foreignish hawk on pale top near Louis Ranch. Turned W. now hungry. 58 to La Panza ranch; no one home. To lake S. Low cir.-stratus clouds. Near Calif. Valley jet, a black red-tailed hawk. 1 mi. S. of Calif. V., 200+ ewes & lambs, 1 turkey vulture. At foot of Soda Lake, 31 mi. to N.E., saw 300+ sandhill cranes, mostly in air, noisy. 16 1/2 S. of Calif. V., start dirt road, narrow rough. Stopped at Reyes Mrs. store. Talked w/ "Alice," the former smithing of Cordova; said in despair. Said poisoning on C. Plains killed dogs. Aynsial traps. And no fear of Reyes family. But know local people. | On to hungry 33 & 5, Near-square mile of alfalfa, now shot. One group 300+ sheep before county line at Bellinger Canyon. | About 1 mile beyond Quedal Rd., I visited home of O.H. Wagers & Delia. He in hospital. She tall thin & liked animals. Has pet quail 7 yrs old. Said live 37 years. Said about 3 years ago a carna killed (shot) big hwy.; 9 ft wings spread. She phoned Ed John Taft (of Ojai). When he got there, bird gone. (Timbers?). She said formerly raised turkeys; put dead ones on hill; came occasional. Came & ate them. Also eagles. She said turkey run in
