11 Feb. 1979
Mc Millan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
Hutz, Cal Poly student at Jim Button ranch - No interest in hawks. Known
Nimtm. route to peregrine nest (showed by USFS wildlife xerox, ?), which
John Schmidt will watch this spring.
12 Feb. 1979. Warmish & hazy, w. alto - status uncertain. With Nayer, hiked
circle from my shack to S, W, N, E, + back to shack in about 3 hours.
Saw 1 jackrabbit only, 100+ white crowned sparrows, many quail, 2
Say Phoebe, but generally few kinds of birds & rare flowers (some on
filament). Grass & lowly about 4" tall. Nayer departed for his alto about
1 p.m. Worked at my shack.
To Himtn. area, San Luis Ob Co.
23 Feb. 1979. Drive to Pozo, arriving 0830. Met then Larry, Hutz &
Lynette Sherwood of Cal Poly. We drove in my Chevy pickups to Himtn. look-
out. Cold & windy, occasional rain; discouraging. Went out ridge to S. of
20 & down a trail, recently brushed in parts, areas. Pastel topo! Hard land
partly cleared lately by USFS. Down then climb on a ridge, then to
left in head of Deer ? Cr, the down to Hi Mtn valley meadow. Grass among
oaks on slope, & a high sandstone monolith. Trail to V. then thru
glass, passing just E. of rocks, thence W. down a canyon, under
oaks, lemels, madrone, in shady canyon, finally to a meadow
of a few acres, opposite the Dragon's Head sandstone monolith (top of E.
side visible from 60). L. said that peregrine nest watchers camped in
the meadow. He pointed out site of peregrine nest, near a "mesican,
but "doped hole. Some years a different site. Carders had nested
in 2 or 3 places at R. side of the much pathed cliff. It was the
usual Vagueas sandstone. Lopez Lake not visible from our site,
but probably from top of Dragon's head. We saw no carders, eagles,
or peregrines. USFS will put John Schmidt as a watcher about April
1. Carder nest covers large & open, so could easily walk into them.
