30 January 1972 N. Quitana Roa, Mexico thatched roof houses with stick and adobe walls. On brushy face but boboia-like trees, logano, almeigos, to 50! now said an American linguist, expert in Indian languages, lived about 15 mi. S. On though sparsely settled country of Quitana Roa with short thick forest, occasional tree down to 50-60'. To Canillo Puerto, small town. Camped nearby. Many guns seen here, could a striking out of dogs, .22's and escopetas. Small dogs accompanied some hunters. Many men knew little or no Spanish; "puro Maya" they say. Saw two large black and white (bellies) jays. Took 10 a.m. due to Chetumal 31 January 1972. Man- ygoses, swampy ground, flamboyant trees, hot. Stayed last one hour. Had to send baggage thru customs inspector on way out, on line to Escarego. Two customs stops on road, just "turistas" apparently not bothered. (Canillo to Chetumal, fairly well settled.) Left Chat. 2 p.m. La Moja, town with many stick and thatch houses. + pupil, + pm., had good to south. Ruins (Cheron?) a few km. W. Roads off to S., such as to Esperanza, 55 km. S. Forest fairly uniform, short, finally passed big lake on S. side, in fairly settlement. Then crossed "El Centenario," and now Lopez Mateos, not many miles before Escarego. One plaza frontier town on railroad - bustling and wet. Camped about 1 mile S. of town. 1 February 1972. Blackdown called. Blacker white jays too. In town, went to Jefatura, Doctor Forestal y de la Tierra. There are six sectors in Campeche. Met there Raul Bertare Vega of Inst. Nac. Invent. Foresteria, located 7 km. Toward Vill-
