10 February 1979.
La Panza Ranch, San Luis Obispo, CA.
Trundle back most of 1920's. We were unable to find trail to crop so located down canyon. Found a good trail going west top ridge, I assumed (actually did not) that it connected w. trail at crogs. Walked back down canyon. Panning nicely w. several pools 4' deep x 10' wide, clear cold water. Booked ca 4pm & drove out. Talked w. Debbie Arnold at ranch house; she much interested in condors. We drove back to San Me M. Ranch. /On driving, Ellen & Bobby McM. show ed O. Pearson's 1952 film of Peruvian altiplano; guests included Helen, Jim, & Steve Santon, some writer, & Irving McM. as well as Dan & Mary. I narrated & answered questions. Didn't give willing permission to work on their ranch lands. /On 9 Feb., noon, I saw golden eagle at dead ground spread on powd road in Bob Griets canyon, near old adobe. Apparently resting pair there (asks Ellen), & site formerly used. Stayed at J. McM. Ranch.
11 Feb. 1979: Sunday. With Roger's invited Ellen; then drove up Bitterwater Canyon. At Grant Lake many cots & canyonside lunches. Saw about 5 rough-legged hawks (weider wings, white tail w. black tip) titiplano on porte along way to Carrizo Plain. Then via Hwy. 58 to La Panza Ranch. No one home. So went again to Bartrap Canyon. At Ellen's this morning, we saw two immature (white tails) golden-eagles over his house, 200' up. Left ca at water tanks, walked up canyon bottom 25 min. to first falls. W of chinese mirigamae, took trail up ridge toward crogs. Trail ascended, but went to E. side of cliffs & ended. There 1:30, walked cliffs & saw two adult golden eagles, one shed by roar, near top of cliffs. Probably crops trail came from N., where porte invisible. We hiked back down the canyon. Many coyote tracks but none destructive. No flowers yet; many manzanitas. Very & fairly warm. Back down canyon & drove back to San Me M. Ranch. Saw should we report Tehuachby condor article in California, a PSAirline's gas magazine, Fullmoon. /Violetta, Larry
