28 January 1979. Sunday.
Mr. Pozo San Luis Obispo, Cal.
Raptor news: Boys & Beartraps had died about 2 years ago. I drove
via Nacaju area to Hwy. 58, and down Shell Co. to La McMillan Ranch.
29 January 1979. Monday. Clear, frosty. Drove up Shell Creek. Met & talked
with Steve Binton (son of Jim) and John Arnold. They said a student named
Larry, now working for Jim, was interested in raptors. I drove on via
ranch front shoulder to Boys road and Queen Bee campground. Skipping
snow or shaded parts of road. Drove 1 mi. up Pine Mtn. roads. Fine
views; calming 5:00 sunrise. View past Caliente Mtn. to Mt. Abel area.
I liked S. on ridge trail toward Pine Spring (USFS gate where road
reached ridge, but no sign or obstacle to 2-wheeled traffic to S., ran
to 4-wheel to N. Motorcycle tracks, but only 100 yds. to S., next to N.)
Walked S. about a mile on; found tracks of large animals, probably same
one noted here 1974-1976, about same size, adult or. Perhaps hawks a
week old, now as snow. I set a rock point at head of Beartrap C. &
watched cliffs below for 2 hours midday. Upon arrival, adult eagle
came at me and soared 100' overhead, but no further raptor
action. Saw ravens. Cattle on grasslands of La Panga Ranch below,
to E. This is area of Leon Dawson condor nest, Kelly Trail collecting area.
I walked back N. & down to car. Drove via Canis Plains & Bethlehem Rd.
to El McMillan's. We plan lower Beartrap trip tomorrow.
30 January 1979. Tuesday. With [illegible], deputied in my new pickups for La
Panga Ranch. They told us Steve Arnold, in early 20's, & wife Debbie at
ranch house. Then drove on ranch road several miles S., along
San Juan Creek. Some fine rough sandstone cliffs to E. of river No
calves or cows; only steers on road range. Ranch was up
for sale and possibly would be subdivided. About 25,000 A now,
& price roughly $200/A. Many spermatophile mounds. I drove
