Journal 26 November 1978 McM Ranch Skerdm, SKO Co. seen Washburn plow on Carrie's Plain, 24 Oct morning. They hunted quail in Deer Park area & saw coyote 00+ quail all over (3) got limiters. Saw no Oocanty. More talk w/ Ellen. Then drove to Berkeley via Hwy 51. Berkeley to Coloma, SKO Co. 15 December 1978. Friday. Departed Berkeley 1 pm in my 400 pickup & drove to Coloma & CB McM Ranch. Fog in S Valley. Talked about colors. Then to my shack at Lois ranch: 16 December 1978. Partly cloudy, series - status in afternoon worked on my shack, pruned olive tree. Talked w/ Ian. Then to Ellen's for dinner & talk w/ Bill Francis (wife gency) from Selma's (did paper on bird's quail). Hoping that these Francis, Marteny andholm will contribute to earth research fund. Drizzly evening. Slept at my shack. 1 Francis had arrived early. 17 December afternoon, w/ El, they drove through Carrie Plain & saw several kinds of hawks, mountain plater, + some sandhill cranes. 17 December. Bart's Rainy but clearing somewhat. Joined Elvis Francis & we left about 11 am for Painted Rock area. On Grant Lake boundary of geese, many mallards, canvas - body, pentaids, + a few teal. Many starys & Brewer blackbirds in leafless tree on wires. On fence wire saw: savannah sp, lark sp, w-c sparrows, about 30 roams in one area of ploughed ground, N end of plain. Hawks especially atop pole by road; 30+ larks, red red-tails, red rough-legged, 2 ferrug- craver, 1 pigeon hawk, 3 or + marsh hawks (one o-?), kestrel mostly female (why?); perhaps 80%+. Near Soda Lake & Painted Rock Ranch saw: flocks 50+ curlews, flocks 100+ mountain plater. Accoring five sandhill cranes, then eventually about 2000, mainly on ploughed ground. Much "dancing" in some groups. Land calls. El says her noted no decrease over the years. Wetropen-unfenced land,
