29 November 1978.
Mr. M & Mrs. Ventura, C., Calif.
Up a condo research expense fund. Mark Palmer & about 10 other
Auraria Club people arrived. Several of us went to camp at Koye
Creek, 20 mi. through Larkwood Valley, at about 4000 ft. Cold.
In adventure zone below pinyon pine zone. Slept out.
25 November 1978. Frosty night; sleeping bags wet & frosty. Water
froze. El said heard coyote. Clear night. I returned to Langer
Sta. Met other Def John & Betty Davis from Carmel Valley were there,
& Wymbly Carre of Defender of Wildlife, Carmel. We went to
start of Mt. Pinos road; climb still required. As we went to Lamon
and about a mile out (Hungry Valley road), when we watched 5 sides
of Frasier Mt. & tops other hills-hills (or to E on Tujun Ranch).
We at edge of motorcycle ORV play area; hundreds of cars &
cyclers & work horses. We saw a golden eagle, flying & perched
(adult)
steepe hill E of Lamon; also a coyote walking near cattle then;
a flying vroom (bawls) over slope two. Above Frasier Mt. tops,
occasional eagle or redtail, & finally one adult condor - it
sailed straight toward Tujun R. area E of Espavine Rd. We watched
it for about 10 miles of travel. I stated to get cold wind; some
left, but rest of us drove back to Esperavine and east toward
Edmonston Pump Sta. About 1/2 there, we saw group of several cars at
roadsides, & people looking S up slope. They said there were 10
cardors there, & that one had come about 11 am from NW, &
they had good view of features. We set up telescope & saw
several large dark birds on ground or in branches of oaks
or grassy slope about 2 mi away. Mostly just sat quiet.
Lay, but one was active, as if feeding on carcass, & often
extended wings up. Birds seemed to me small for cardors,
