C Koford 1978 Journal 23 Nov. 1978 (Thanksgiving Day) Berkeley to Chubut, 6:00 am. Car. Departs clear in my '6 che, perhaps for condor trips to Mt. Liver area. Left 11 am & went via Highway 5 to Kettleman Hills turnoff, thence west on 46 to Cholame, 5 up Sal Prieto Canyon to El Mc Millan ranch on Gillis Canyon road. No one home. Continued to Low Mc Millan ranch & my shack there. Clear in upper G & T Valley but cloudy (fog) south of Baros turnoff. Much ploughed ground in valley; flowers of [illegible] (curlins?) some sites. Visited w. Low M.M. family. They planned guail hunt in Dices Camp area in morning. Phoned Glen. 24 Nov. 1978. Fresno (no guess) 1-2° fall. To El Mc M. plus I departed w. him in my car, about 11 am. 5 up Buttewater Valley, thence thru California Valley & 5 through Carrizo Plains. El saw several hundred sandhill cranes in grassmeadow road, just 5 of Painted Rock way yesterday. We saw none today, but flocks of mountain planes (100+ me flock) feeding on ground. (Near Elvis home, we ploughed ground & saw flock (50+ hilldeer this morning).) We searched for condors in air but saw none. Saw cattle but no sheep. (Cattle calving season now, & sheep lambing season.) I saw many sheep on alfalfa stubble in S. Cuyama Valley now.) We trud fairly paved Mt. Abel road. (El said canyon to W. had been good for condor sightings in past.) Near Apache saddle, many fine new wooden houses, & much car traffic. Clear sky; light snow on ground above 5000'. A jam of cars at start of road up Mt Liver; chain required to go up that road. Hundreds of people, many w. skins & sleds, walking ups. Went to Chubut ranch R.O. Detroit rgn. Dave Alexander had left, but office girls hostetable. Janet Namber & I friend were there; could not go up Little Liver road today because too soft. We talked about setting
