To Guatemala City
County, rocky, but slopes cultivated. Burning signs rare. Good livestock market at Colind, with many Andeans and their dog piles and other wares. Then took road S to El Chel. Dirt road, one way, but much rock & not too steep. Desert/skull scrub & linder; old cultu ration. River started about 3000'. Later more oak trees, there above 5000' w. landside. Patches of banana or cane. A summit (Copita de Bat House) about 6000'. Bike climbed a few landside there, but no salamander found. | Descended to S.-march, potter larger pine, a few clean streams. Road gradually improved. Good water, for two, of dry brushy hills mostly. Crossed a wide muddy river on white steel bridge. Road up & down, winding. Occasional oaks. Reached paved road about 30 km from Lake Atitlan at San Juan SAC., a larger town. Pine area, probably used by city folks to cool off, a far weekend house. Truck crops on two acres. Returned the car (Vespa Patrol) to Hotel La Real. Stayed w. Giles & Saranne at Chlot Surja. Light rain in evening.
